A recent twitter conversation has raised perceptions of HR which are commonly shared by those who have been through a difficult experience with HR or have heard horror stories second hand through the experience of others. When you think about HR, what do you associate with the profession? In my experience, the general public tend to associate HR with the function of recruitment, then termination of employment but what about everything that we do in between?
According to Wikipedia, Human Resource Management is:
“a function in organizations designed to maximize employee performance in service of their employer’s strategic objectives. HR is primarily concerned with how people are managed within organizations, focusing on policies and systems.”
I’m not hung up on whether Wikipedia is a credible resource but I do feel comfortable with the way the profession of HR has been defined. Human Resources is not a function created purely for the discipline of staff or solely to hire new employees, HR is about creating systems, policies & procedures to support a productive, happy and fully functional workforce. Small businesses, not for profits & medium sized enterprises may be on top of their game when it comes to providing products and services within their industry but when it comes to handling people management issues, there is definite value in gaining assistance from HR Management Consulting.
